Multi-factor Lifestyle interventions against cognitive decline (Lifestyle Selfie Study)

Lifestyle Self-Monitoring of Individualized Multiple Risk Factor Management towards Disease Modification of Dementia and other Age-related Diseases (Lifestyle Selfie Study)

The LIFESTYLE-SELFIE study aims to address the societal increase in cognitive decline by developing personalized lifestyle interventions (for example diet, sleep or physical activity) based on a combination of biomarker profiles and patient motivation. The biomarker assessment tool will be designed in collaboration with Predica Diagnostics, which already has a successful track record in a similar pathway in oncology prevention interventions. The effectivity of this personalized intervention package will be assessed using a gamified self-monitoring mobile app. The latter will be developed and validated in collaboration with Orikami, with whom we initially developed the self-monitoring tool.

Dementia is a global issue on the rise with an estimated 50 million cases in 2017 and expected to grow further in the near future. Since there is currently no cure and care for these patients is intensive on healthcare as a whole, more attention to prevention of cognitive decline (and ultimately dementia) is necessary.

Previous studies have tried to implement single factor generalized lifestyle interventions to combat cognitive decline however cognitive decline be influenced by different lifestyle factors and thus effectivity of changing lifestyle is dependent on the needs of the patient. This study aims to develop an intervention and corresponding training tools for healthcare professionals in order to accurately identify the most effective and feasible solutions per patient by interviewing them using motivational interview techniques and identifying potentially suitable biomarker targets in the blood. Taken together, these factors will be used to develop a personalized intervention in order to hopefully increase effectivity of the interventions over generalized lifestyle changes. The effectivity of the intervention will be preliminarily tested using a mobile app in which different measures of cognitive function will be measured using different computer games, and feasibility will be a main outcome both for the intervention and the cognitive assessments at home.

It is expected that by tailoring the intervention to the patients needs adherence to lifestyle changes will be easier and mitigating cognitive decline will be more successful, ultimately also by applying biomarker targeting.

Summary
The LIFESTYLE-SELFIE study aims to address the societal increase in cognitive decline by developing personalized lifestyle interventions (for example diet, sleep or physical activity) and patient motivation. The effectivity of this personalized intervention will be assessed using a gamified self-monitoring mobile app and a set of valid biomarkers corresponding with the lifestyle risk factor modification will be assessed.
