Patient outcome oriented care: an integral approach for patients with osteoarthritis

Development and validation of an osteoarthritis module for the Assessment of Burden of Chronic Conditions (ABCC)-tool

In this project we will focus on the development and validation of a module for osteoarthritis (OA), to fit in the Assessment of Burden of COPD tool. For this purpose, a collaboration is set up between ReumaNederland, Maastricht University and Curavista BV.

With approximately 9% of the entire Dutch population known to be registered with OA in general practice (1.56 million people), OA is one of the most prevalent disorders in The Netherlands. Although OA is not considered a life-threatening disease, pain and disability symptoms can have a major impact on a person’s daily living.

With an increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, including osteoarthritis (OA), sustainable care is more needed

than ever before. We believe that expansion of the ABCC-tool with a module for OA can make important steps towards personalised care that is affordable, accessible and of high quality.

Moreover, an early exploration amongst patients with OA and healthcare providers illustrated the need of developing a tool like the ABCC tool. Patients with OA indicated that they often feel lost, as they do not know what their options are and who to turn to with their complaints. We therefore formulated the following research questions:

  1. Which domains should be incorporated in the OA module of the ABCC tool?
  2. Is the tool valid and reliable for patients with OA?

For the development study relevant stakeholders will be interviewed. During consensus meetings, the first version of the module will be determined. In the validation study, we ask 50-60 people with OA to complete a questionnaire.

By working together with Curavista BV the tool will become available for healthcare providers and patients, to be used in daily care.
