Kadans opens Plus Ultra Amsterdam on Medical Business Park

Knowledge hub for science and innovation in life sciences promotes developments for healthcare sector

Kadans Science Partner festively opened the brand new Plus Ultra Amsterdam building at the Medical Business Park, located near the Amsterdam University Medical Centre, in the presence of Jeroen Heijs of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate. The opening of Plus Ultra Amsterdam is a major step forward for companies in the life sciences and healthcare sectors who are jointly striving for a future where diseases are preventable and patients receive the best treatments – an ambition that is closely aligned with the mission of Amsterdam UMC.

Plus Ultra Amsterdam is part of Kadans’ international network, which already connects 27 science clusters in Europe. “We are immensely proud that Plus Ultra Amsterdam is now officially open. We believe a place like this is of great value for meetings and knowledge sharing. The name ‘Plus Ultra’ means ‘further and further’, which is a direct reference to the drive to keep innovating and improving. We look forward to expanding the Kadans network even further together with all the parties taking up residence in the building,” says Johan van Gerven, Director of Development at Kadans Science Partner.

Advancing science

Plus Ultra Amsterdam is the first building to house multiple tenants focusing on health research at the Medical Business Park. The building brings together students, scientists and entrepreneurs to promote collaboration and scientific developments. The building consists of 7,368 square metres of space spread over seven floors. At least 3,000 square metres are available for laboratories. Plus Ultra Amsterdam was designed with a focus on promoting interaction between tenants, with an open atrium acting as a connecting element for all users of the building. Space is still available for various tenants within life sciences.

State-of-the-art innovation hub

The green campus environment of the Medical Business Park is an excellent location for life sciences and healthcare organisations, due to the highly specialised medical knowledge and research facilities present in and around the Amsterdam University Medical Centre. As one of the first projects on campus, Plus Ultra Amsterdam forms an important link in the existing Amsterdam UMC ecosystem. The building serves as a vibrant innovation hub where science and entrepreneurship come together to develop new methods of diagnostics and treatment.

National Care Innovation Award 2024

The festive opening of Plus Ultra Amsterdam was kicked off with welcoming remarks by Michel Leemhuis, CEO at Kadans Science Partner, and Gerty Holla on behalf of the Zorg2025 partners. Other panelists present were Jeroen Heijs (Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate), Marlies Schijven (Amsterdam UMC), Hans van Goudoever (Board of Directors Amsterdam UMC) and Alexander Scholtes (Municipality of Amsterdam).

During the opening, the regional preliminary round of the National Care Innovation Award 2024, an award for the most innovative company in the scale-up phase, took place. The whole day was dedicated to working on innovations for a better future for diagnostics and treatment. This made the regional preliminary round a great complement to the opening of Plus Ultra Amsterdam. EIDOS, a concept by Ellogon.AI was chosen by the jury for a place in the national final. In addition, Maryse Wiewel of Healthplus.ai, winner of the regional preliminary round of the National Care Innovation Award 2023, was a guest speaker.
