Flowsure, a smart urine monitor for optimization of treatment and improved patient safety

Flowsure is an innovative project from Amsterdam UMC, developed in partnership with Flowsure BV, to create a smart urine monitor that improves patient safety and care. This public-private partnership aims to turn a measurement device into an intelligent system that continuously tracks patients’ health and alerts medical staff to early signs of deterioration. By working together, the hospital and company are combining their expertise to bring this new technology to patients’ bedsides.

Every year, thousands of patients in the Netherlands are hospitalized for conditions like heart failure, infections, or after surgery. Early detection of health problems is crucial, as delays can lead to longer hospital stays, more complications, and even life-threatening situations. Currently, nurses check urine output only a few times a day, which can miss early warning signs. With an aging population and increasing pressure on healthcare staff, smarter solutions are urgently needed to keep patients safe and reduce costs.

The Flowsure project will develop and test a smart urine monitor that automatically measures and analyzes urine production around the clock. The system uses advanced algorithms to spot early changes in a patient’s condition, such as a sudden drop in urine output, which can signal serious health problems. When the system detects a risk, it immediately alerts medical staff, allowing them to act quickly. For heart failure patients, the monitor will also help doctors and nurses adjust treatments more precisely, based on real-time information.

The project will generate valuable data to support further improvements and regulatory approval, with the goal of making this technology available to hospitals across Europe.

Summary
Flowsure is developing a smart urine monitor that continuously tracks patient health and alerts medical staff to early signs of deterioration, improving safety and care. By enabling rapid, personalized treatment adjustments, especially for heart failure patients, Flowsure aims to shorten hospital stays and transform patient monitoring.
