Transforming infusion therapy with new technology for optimal care and efficiency
A new collaboration between UMCG and Ivy Medical aims to transform infusion therapy by advancing the Ivy Duo+, an innovative infusion pump, integrating two functions—high-precision and large-volume administration—into one device, addressing current limitations in patient care and nursing workflows. The project, supported by public and private stakeholders, promises advancements in medical technology and healthcare efficiency.
Infusion therapy is essential in healthcare, but existing pumps often complicate care with frequent alarms, lack of automation, and restricted patient mobility. These issues are particularly critical given increasing demands on healthcare services. Current systems are prone to errors, and nurses face heavy workloads, partly due to inefficiencies in managing infusion devices. By creating a more accurate and versatile solution, this project aligns with the urgent need to address staff shortages and improve patient care quality.
The Ivy Duo+ aims to achieve unprecedented precision, reducing deviations from 3–5% to just 1%, enabling it to handle diverse applications with a single device. The project also focuses on developing advanced safety systems to prevent infusion errors. The Ivy Duo+ will be validated through a pilot study in UMCG’s Nephrology Department, where its potential to reduce nurse workloads and improve patient mobility will be assessed. Collaboration with stakeholders ensures the design meets real-world needs.
The project will deliver tested prototypes, safety advancements, and published findings demonstrating efficiency improvements. If successful, the Ivy Duo+ will set a new standard in infusion therapy, saving costs, easing workloads, and enhancing patient outcomes. This innovation addresses critical healthcare challenges, ensuring better care in a resource-constrained environment.
