Rick Brink elected as Minister of Disability Issues

- Since Monday 17 June, the Netherlands has, for the first time in its history, a Minister of Disability Issues. Rick Brink won this appointment during the broadcast of the television programme ‘De minister van Gehandicaptenzaken’ (The Minister of Disability Issues) on NPO1. Brink was elected by a jury, including former cyclist Leontien van Moorsel, cabaret artist Vincent Bijlo and former Minister Ronald Plasterk, from six candidates.

Trend analysis: bright future ahead for Dutch biotech

- The leading global business development database Biotechgate presents its 2019 trend report for the Dutch life sciences market. The annual trend report shows that the Netherlands is on track to become a world leading life sciences cluster in 2030.

The winner of the Venture Challenge Spring 2019 is AmbAgon

- During the Dutch Biotech Event where biotech companies of all sizes, from start-ups to scale-ups, meet and get inspired, the LifeSciences@Work Venture Challenge is announced. This year’s winner of the Spring edition became AmbAgon. The Eindhoven-based start-up develops small-molecule therapeutics for breast cancer by augmenting the tumour-suppressing functions of the 14-3-3 protein.

Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 funding opportunities

- The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) has now launched its 18th and 19th Calls for proposals under IMI2. The Call gives researchers from diverse sectors the opportunity to participate in ambitious public-private partnerships that will pave the way for the development of the medicines of the future.

Eurostars project is awarded to Dutch biotech company VitroScan

- A total grant sum of EUR €3.47 million, of which total subsidy ~ €1.82 million has been awarded to a multidisciplinary project, named ‘3D SELECT’. The European consortium consist of six collaborating partners: VitroScan (lead), Anapath, FHNW, Uppsala University, Oncodia, and Robovision.

Four public-private projects on big data and health have been awarded grants

- In the Commit2Data round for Big Data & Health, four public-private research projects have been awarded grants for research into the early detection and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The Top Sector Life Sciences & Health, NWO, ZonMW, the Heart Foundation and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport have jointly made a total of €6.58 million available for these projects. The Netherlands eScience Center is also providing each project with support in the form of eScience Research Engineers.

The Netherlands continues to be European Innovation Leader

- The Netherlands continues to be an innovation leader. In the authoritative European Innovation Scoreboard 2019 (EIS), the Netherlands ranks amongst the four strongest innovators, together with Sweden, Finland and Denmark. Luxembourg and the United Kingdom, unlike 2018, no longer rank amongst the innovation leaders.

Ten million for One Health research in The Netherlands

- Het Erasmus MC zal de komende vijf jaren met partners binnen het Netherlands Centre for One Health onderzoeken hoe we in Nederland beter voorbereid kunnen zijn op infectieziekten overgedragen door muggen. Hiertoe heeft NWO een bedrag van bijna negen miljoen euro onderzoeksgeld toegekend, aangevuld tot 10 miljoen door bijdragen van zeven publieke organisaties die meewerken in het onderzoek. Uniek is het multidisciplinaire karakter van de samenwerking, waarbij ook gebruik wordt gemaakt van Citizen Science.
