Regenerative Medicine Translational Synergy

Repairing or replacing diseased tissues and organs with the help of the body’s self-healing capacity, that is what Regenerative Medicine is about! This program develops Regenerative Medicine solutions for patients. Academia, health foundations and companies work together to translate knowledge into therapies and get these therapies ready for the market.

The “Regenerative Medicine Translational Synergy" program focuses on Regenerative Medicine (RM), a promising new form of medicine with potential to repair or replace diseased tissues/organs and prevent degeneration by activating and instructing the body's self-healing capacity. Key partners are the Dutch health foundations (Diabetes Research Foundation, Kidney Foundation, Heart foundation, Eye Foundation), academia (Eindhoven University of Technology, UMC Utrecht, Leiden University Medical Center, Maastricht University) and the company HCM Medical, leveraging expertise in translational product development from various perspectives.

Almost 60% of the Dutch population has one or more chronic diseases, among the elderly this is more than 95%. Due to the aging population and the increase in chronic diseases, society is facing an enormous challenge to keep care affordable, of high quality, and staffable (sufficient staff to meet the demand for care). Our current healthcare system is not sustainable in the long run: we need more cure and less care. Regenerative Medicine helps to make the change: From Care to Cure.

RegMed XB’s program focuses on moonshots: ambitious projects that develop RM-solutions for significant patient needs related to chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes, osteoarthritis). For each moonshot, a step-by-step approach is necessary (roadmap) to manage the development of affordable RM-therapies. If more chronically ill patients are cured by RM-therapies, the health care system will be more and more relieved from carrying the burden of long-term care.

This program has a strategic focus on promising product development projects from public-private research groups which are valuable for RegMed XB. The selection of projects is based upon several criteria. Project proposals will be reviewed by a council, consisting of leading experts in the broad field of translational research and product development.
