Health innovation in practice

Venture Challenge alumni have collectively raised over €1 billion in funding. This milestone marks a significant achievement for the Dutch program and highlights how research within Life Sciences & Health is increasingly finding its way into investable companies. Since its inception in 2008, the Venture Challenge has supported more than 250 teams in translating scientific ideas into viable business propositions. Over the years, the program has become a key instrument in bridging the gap between academic research and company formation.

Menno Gravemaker is naturally curious. As a child, he wanted to understand every detail. Fascinated by the moving images on television, he wondered: how does that actually work? His curiosity led to creative ventures from an early age. While studying Electrical Engineering at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), his drive to understand how things work remained. He even unintentionally started a business selling stick-on mustaches for parties, but ultimately wanted to pursue something that would contribute to society.

Innovative SMEs, scientists, medical specialists, and patient organizations are facing a shared challenge: how can we accelerate the development and implementation of groundbreaking osteoarthritis treatments? Collaboration is essential in the search for solutions to osteoarthritis (OA). ReumaNederland is taking on a unique role in this effort. Through initiatives like the OA SME Roundtable, the health fund is actively building an ecosystem centered on cross-pollination and co-creation.

The added value of the SME Call lies in the targeted support of innovative industrial research through close collaboration between research organizations and SMEs.
