Prevention of Periodontitis by Aloe Vera Polysaccharides PPAVP
Reducing the presence of pathogens characteristic of periodontitis with Aloe Vera polysaccharides
Orange Pearl and the University of Applied Sciences will be jointly developing assays to study in vitro plaque formation and bacterial aggregation. The aim is to reduce the presence of bacterial pathogens involved in periodontitis with Aloe Vera (AV) polysaccharides. The focus will be on reducing plaque, decreasing gum bleeding tendencies, and altering the microbial composition of the plaque and saliva of volunteers with induced gingivitis.
Oral health is vital for overall well-being. Disturbed oral microbiota can cause gingivitis and periodontitis, and are linked to systemic conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory infections. Gingivitis affects 50% of adults aged 30 or older, while periodontitis affects 42%. About 30% of those with gingivitis develop periodontitis. Therefore, research into preventive antimicrobial measures for gingivitis and periodontitis is essential for improving both oral and general health. Given the rise in antibiotic resistance, new, evidence-based antimicrobial strategies are urgently needed. Demonstrating the clinical efficacy of AV polysaccharides for treating plaque and gingivitis could lead to novel antimicrobial applications in other therapeutic areas. This project aims to develop cost-effective and safe antimicrobial therapies to enhance oral health and beyond.
Effective prevention and management of periodontal diseases can lead to substantial cost savings in healthcare. Research shows that eliminating gingivitis and increasing the diagnosis and treatment rates of periodontitis can yield a positive return on investment (ROI) for healthcare systems. Early detection and treatment of periodontal diseases through preventive healthcare can reduce overall treatment costs, maintain better productivity, and reduce absenteeism due to dental issues.
The deliverables are to identify sources of AV polysaccharides that neutralize the capability of relevant oral pathogens to create plaque (biofilm) and reduce their adherence to oral tissue. An AV source with potent aggregating and/or antibiofilm activity will be tested in a voluntary study with experimental gingivitis.
