INSPIRE: A New Therapy for Type 1 Diabetes
The INSPIRE project is developing a new therapy for type 1 diabetes (T1D) through RegMed XB. The project focuses on three goals. First, we are finalizing the design and testing of a small implant that can safely deliver insulin-producing cells, ensuring stability, function, and sterile handling. Second, we are creating insulin producing cells from stem cells, with proper storage and release protocols for clinical use. Third, we are testing the implant and cells in appropriate preclinical models to show safety, engraftment, and function before moving to human trials.
T1D is a lifelong disease that affects more than 120,000 persons in the Netherlands. People with diabetes need daily insulin injections and blood sugar checks, which can disrupt school, work, and mental health. Families often help to care for loved ones, adding emotional and financial stress. Hospital visits, complications like blindness or kidney failure, and high medical costs make T1D a heavy burden. A therapy that restores natural insulin production could change lives, reduce healthcare needs, and allow people with diabetes to live more independently.
INSPIRE combines a clinically scalable implant with stem cell–derived islets to restore the body’s own insulin production. Using high-quality production methods, careful testing, and optimized cell delivery, this innovative approach aims to provide a functional cure. It addresses the daily challenges of T1D, reduces the long-term burden on people with diabetes and their families, and allows persons to live a more normal life.
Key deliverables include finalizing the implant and cell delivery methods, producing GMP-compliant stem cell–derived islets, validating quality and storage, and demonstrating safety and function in preclinical models. These steps prepare the therapy for its first use in humans and bring the project closer to a long-lasting, curative solution for T1D people with diabetes.
