Innovative Surgical techniques for Eyes with Advanced glaucoma (I-SEA)

This innovative project, marked by a strong public-private partnership, aims to revolutionize glaucoma treatment. Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Current treatments often have complications, leaving an unmet need for safer and more effective solutions. Through this project, we are developing miniature glaucoma implants that promise to preserve patient vision and offer a better quality of life.

Glaucoma's impact on society is significant and growing. It affects millions of people worldwide, with numbers expected to rise due to aging populations. The burden of blindness caused by glaucoma is particularly alarming, as it leads to a loss of independence and increased healthcare costs. Despite existing treatments, approximately 10% of treated patients still go blind from glaucoma. Innovation in glaucoma surgery is urgently needed to address this public health challenge and its economic implications.

Our project's approach is twofold. First, we are refining the production process of miniature glaucoma implants, ensuring they meet the highest quality standards. This will make the implants safer and more accessible to patients. Second, we're introducing magnetic actuation to these implants, providing personalized control over intraocular pressure. This innovation has the potential to reduce complications, improve patient outcomes, and significantly impact the management of glaucoma.

The project's deliverables include finalized production protocols, prototypes of innovative implants, and thorough in vitro and animal testing. These achievements bring us closer to a first-in-man feasibility study, which will assess the effectiveness and safety of these groundbreaking implants. Through this project, we are advancing glaucoma treatment, addressing a pressing societal challenge, and offering hope to millions of people affected by this debilitating disease.
