Senescent cells accumulate in inflammatory diseases and their phenotypical characterization can provide novel opportunities for treatment
Various stresses lead cells to irreversibly lose the ability of proliferating – a phenomenon known as cellular senescence. Senescent cells naturally accumulate with age and acquire pro-inflammatory and detrimental functions. While senescent cells are considered major contributors to the onset and progression of chronic disease, the mechanisms underlying their pro-disease functions in human tissues remains scarce. Identifying such mechanisms can offer opportunities for the development of novel therapeutic interventions. During this project, we aim to study the characteristics of senescent cells and identify potential therapeutic targets in the field of inflammatory diseases.
