Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) offers advantages as kidney replacement therapy for eligible patients with kidney failure. Recently the WEAKID (WEArable KIDney) device for peritoneal dialysis was developed and tested on patients. The Public Private Partnership REDESIGN-PD unites the expertise from the Department of Nephrology of the University Medical Centre Utrecht, Nanodialysis B.V., and Inreda Diabetic B.V. and will make the WEAKID device ready for the market. With the launch of this new product a new economic activity is started in the Netherlands that can grow to an international business of considerable size.

WEAKID is expected to improve patients’ quality of life by enhancing blood purification and improving

ultrafiltration efficiency, therewith reducing uremic symptoms, the need for diet restrictions and the pill

burden (e.g. phosphate binders), and improving fitness and motivation to actively participate in work

and social activities. WEAKID will make it easier for patients to receive dialysis at home.

By reducing the drawbacks of PD, we expect that WEAKID will enhance popularity of PD and will result in a shift from in-center haemodialysis (HD) to the less expensive and more sustainable Peritoneal Dialysis. The ultimate market potential for this product is estimated at 0.5 million patients.

The WEAKID system is a new product enabled by new technology, that has shown proof of concept in a recent clinical trial. REDESIGN-PD aims for a more compact and easy-to-operate-at-home design of WEAKID with improved efficacy.

Objectives of the project are:

1) Better usability: a more compact device by integration of the sorbent cartridge and dialysate unit and an optimized user interface

2) Further improved efficacy by optimizing fluid volumes and sorbent mass and improving circulation in the abdominal cavity

3) Manufacturability ready for CE and the market

4) Clinical validation of the optimized design in a small human trial.
