The Smart Prenatal & Birth Care Region Rotterdam project (Sp/GRR) aims to transform childbirth care in the Rotterdam region through a new public-private partnership between Erasmus MC, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, and MedTech company DEARhealth. By combining hospital expertise, academic research, and digital innovation, Sp/GRR implements risk-driven hybrid care and smart decision support to ease caregiver workload, improve job satisfaction, and raise care quality and efficiency
Childbirth care in the Netherlands faces capacity challenges: low‑risk pregnancies typically require about 10 in‑person consultations. Sp/GRR expects that by enabling home monitoring and customized care pathways, this can drop to six consultations—a 40 % reduction. The project also addresses social inequality by integrating group sessions in the community to better support vulnerable pregnant women, improving both access and health outcomes.
Sp/GRR categorizes pregnant women by risk profile and uses DEARhealth’s technology for remote monitoring. Providers can then intervene earlier and more effectively. Hybrid prenatal infrastructure—featuring both digital and in-person care—allows for task differentiation, smarter resource use, and ensures that high-risk cases get timely attention.
