Real-time metabolic signatures of gut microbial fermentation as a basis for personalized prevention
Non-invasive real-time gut fermentation monitoring to personalize diet and improve human health
In this HMM3.0 project, the Microbiomnical, a unique, non-invasive system that measures gut microbial fermentation in real time will be further developed. This public-private partnership builds on the success of HMM2.0 and will enable long-term studies to investigate how diet, lifestyle, and medication affect gut health and overall wellbeing.
Chronic lifestyle-related diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions are on the rise and cause an increasing burden on healthcare and society. In the Netherlands, almost 50% of adults are overweight, and more than 1.1 million people live with type 2 diabetes. The gut microbiome is now recognized as a central player in these conditions, but current ways of studying it require invasive tests and cannot capture dynamic, real-time responses. This innovation is urgently needed to unlock personalized nutrition and health strategies.
The project will optimize and expand the Microbiomnical system to measure not only fermentation gases (methane, hydrogen, hydrogen sulfide) but also volatile organic compounds such as short-chain fatty acids. These microbial substances directly affect metabolism, immunity, and brain function. After system optimization and sensor development (WP1), a long-term human study (WP2.1) will test how dietary fiber mixtures influence microbial fermentation and health outcomes in people with overweight and prediabetes. Additional laboratory studies (WP2.2) will validate how microbial products affect gut barrier function. In parallel, patients and health organizations will be actively involved to ensure the results are meaningful and widely applicable (WP3).
The HMM3.0 project will further develop the world’s first validated, real-time monitoring system of gut fermentation, a long-term human intervention study, and practical knowledge for healthcare and food innovation. This will open the door to personalized dietary, medical, and lifestyle interventions that strengthen gut, metabolic, immune, and brain health.
