Artificial Intelligence for Personalized Support of Dementia Caregivers: an Accessible Partner in Balance eHealth Solution (AIM)
Exploring how Artificial Intelligence can support dementia caregivers in a way that fits their needs
The AIM project develops a digital support program for caregivers of people with dementia using artificial intelligence. It builds on Partner in Balance, an existing online self-management program that supports informal caregivers with information, practical tips, and guidance from a coach. AIM is carried out within the SPREAD+ consortium through a public-private partnership of researchers, healthcare professionals, technology partners, and end users to create accessible and personalized caregiver support.
In the Netherlands, more than 300,000 people live with dementia, a number expected to rise to over 500,000 by 2040. Around 800,000 informal caregivers support them, and more than half already feel heavily burdened. At the same time, shortages in healthcare staff limit access to timely and appropriate support. Without adequate support, caregivers are at higher risk of stress and overload, which can lead to earlier institutionalization of people with dementia.
AIM addresses this challenge by developing three prototypes based on artificial intelligence: an AI-supported version of the Partner in Balance program that can work without a human coach, an AI tool to train professionals, and an AI tool to support the creation of Partner in Balance content. These prototypes will use artificial intelligence to provide personalized feedback, adapt information to the user’s needs, and support goal setting and reflection. The project follows a participatory approach, involving caregivers and professionals throughout development, with attention to inclusivity, ethics, and real-world applicability.
The project will deliver three artificial intelligence prototypes: an AI-supported version of the Partner in Balance program that can be used with or without a human coach, an AI tool to support the training of professionals, and an AI tool for creating Partner in Balance content. In addition, the project will provide insights into usability, acceptance, and impact in practice, as well as practical recommendations for implementation in dementia care.
