Detection of diseases from breath using plasma technology
Comparative study on alternating current and direct current plasma emission spectroscopy for breath analysis
The BreathSpark project aims to gather scientific understanding on the use of plasma for the development of a breath analysis device. The project is a collaborative effort between respiQ and Ulster University, combining industry and academic expertise to bring this technology to market. respiQ is the pioneer on plasma based emission spectroscopy for breath analysis, while the group from Paul Maguire from Ulster University are the leading research group on plasma emission studies using AI.
Respiratory diseases, including COPD, are major global health concerns, leading to high rates of morbidity and mortality. COPD is the third leading cause of death worldwide, affecting millions and placing a significant burden on healthcare systems. Early detection and monitoring are crucial for effective disease management, reducing hospitalizations, and lowering healthcare costs. This project addresses a critical need for more accessible, non-invasive diagnostic tools, which are essential for improving patient outcomes and public health.
The BreathSpark project utilizes plasma emission spectroscopy to break down molecules in exhaled breath, producing characteristic light emissions that are analyzed to identify volatile organic compounds (VOCs). By comparing alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) plasma techniques, the project hopes to determine the most effective method for breath analysis. The integration of AI enhances the accuracy and reliability of the diagnostic process, providing real-time, actionable insights for disease management.
Deliverables of the project include the development and validation of AC and DC plasma emission models, data analysis of the results obtained and dissemination of the results in international conferences and scientific journals. This innovation promises to improve the quality of life for patients, reduce healthcare costs, and position the Netherlands as a leader in healthtech innovation by providing the first ever reliable breath analyzer for COPD.
