The AI-Catcher project will build biologically explainable AI models for childhood cancer research and diagnostics
The Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology, UMC Utrecht and Performation Healthcare B.V. will work together in the AI-Catcher project to develop a special AI technique. We want to discover which biological properties help predict different types of childhood cancer. The partnership brings together knowledge about AI, bioinformatics and clinical informatics. This helps to improve the explainability of AI more quickly.
The explainability of the algorithm is important so that we can rely on the developed AI models and use them better for the diagnosis of childhood cancer. The algorithm allows us to better understand the precise biological properties. This information can help to improve diagnosis and give tailored treatment. We hope that this will lead to better treatment of the patient and a better quality of life due to fewer side effects.
To do this, the project consists of two parts. First, the project will develop modern algorithms and AI language models to extract diagnostic labels from pathology reports. We will then use these labels to develop an explainable AI model.
Ultimately, this project will provide a biological roadmap for every tumor type. This map can be used to discover which characteristics are important for predicting the type of childhood cancer by the AI algorithm. After additional testing of the program, this program can also be used in diagnostics.
