Training communication skills in oral healthcare using AI-based conversation simulations
CommAvatar is a collaboration between ACTA, HU, Hanzehogeschool, UMCG (knowledge instutions) and DialogueTrainer (technology partner). Together, they are developing realistic digital conversation simulations to help current and future oral healthcare providers practice clear and empathic communication. These AI-based conversation simulations will be tested and prepared for implementation in dental education and professional development.
Good communication is essential for effective and personalized care. Yet many healthcare professionals struggle with basic skills like listening, explaining, and managing patient anxiety. Poor communication can lead to treatment avoidance, low therapy adherence, and worse health outcomes, especially for vulnerable groups such as people with low health literacy or fear of dental care. In the Netherlands, nearly one in three adults has limited health literacy, which affects their ability to understand and act on medical advice. Strengthening communication skills can help reduce these inequalities and improve overall health (costs).
CommAvatar uses innovative technology to simulate realistic patient conversations. The virtual training actor responds naturally and provides targeted feedback during each phase of the dialogue. This allows learners to reflect, improve, and build lasting skills. The simulations are co-designed with students, educators, professionals, and patients to ensure relevance and usability. The project will test the tool in dental education programs and clinical practice, and refine it based on user feedback.
By the end of the project, CommAvatar will deliver six working conversation simulations, a detailed implementation plan, a business case for scaling up, and both scientific and public publications. The tool will be ready for use in dental education and continuing training, with potential to expand to other healthcare fields such as general practice, nursing, and allied health. CommAvatar contributes to a learning healthcare system where communication is a core skill: making care more effective, inclusive, and human-centered.
