Saliva as a tool for a healthy weight
The project Saliva Analysis for Lifestyle Advice and Detection of Obesity (SALDO) unites academic researchers, educators, and industry partners to create a simple, non-invasive saliva test for early detection of obesity-related health risks. This public-private partnership between ACTA (Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam), Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, and the company Ducomed combines scientific innovation with practical application to improve preventive healthcare.
Obesity is one of the fastest-growing health problems worldwide. In the Netherlands, more than 50% of adults are overweight, and around 14% live with obesity. This significantly increases the risk of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. The healthcare costs associated with obesity exceed €2 billion per year. Despite these alarming numbers, early detection of metabolic disturbances remains difficult, as current screening methods are often invasive, expensive, and time-consuming. There is a clear need for accessible and affordable tools that support early prevention and healthy lifestyle choices.
SALDO takes an innovative approach by using saliva as a diagnostic window into metabolic health. Saliva contains many biological markers that reflect changes in the body’s metabolism and inflammation. By identifying a specific panel of these biomarkers, the project aims to develop a reliable test that can signal early metabolic risks linked to obesity and provide personalized lifestyle guidance.
The project will deliver a validated set of salivary biomarkers, a prototype test device, and practical guidelines for use in primary care. Additionally, SALDO will generate scientific publications, educational materials, and a foundation for future European research and innovation in preventive healthcare.
