DIALOGUE

GenAI for Reproductive Health - Engaging adolescents and young adults through digital dialogue on preconception care

The DIALOGUE project is a collaboration between TNO, DPDK, Snijboon, GGD GHOR Nederland, CHOICE, and Rutgers. Together, they aim to support adolescents and young adults in making informed decisions about fertility, contraception, and preconception care. The project builds on the existing “Nietofwelzwanger” initiative and focuses on improving access to clear, reliable information that fits young people’s everyday lives.

Many young people are unaware that a healthy pregnancy starts before conception. This is especially true for young people in vulnerable situations, who face higher health risks and higher healthcare costs. At the same time, contraceptive use among young people in the Netherlands is declining, while unhealthy lifestyle behaviours remain common. For example, around 20% of young women with lower education smoke during pregnancy, which increases the risk of complications. Unintended pregnancies can have major emotional, social, and financial consequences. There is a clear need for accessible and trustworthy information that helps young people make informed choices.

The project develops a genAI-powered platform together with young people themselves. Through interviews, cocreation sessions, and testing, adolescents and young adults help define what information they need, how they want to receive it, and what feels trustworthy. The project provides information in different formats, such as text, audio, video and chat functions, adapted to the users language level and preferences. Safety measures ensure that information remains accurate and reliable.

By the end of the project, the consortium will have created and tested an accessible digital approach for young people aged 16 to 25. The project will deliver evidence on feasibility, usability, and changes in informed decisionmaking. In addition, it will develop a national dissemination strategy and make arrangements for sustainable ownership, so the approach can continue to support young people after the project ends.

Summary
The DIALOGUE-project will transform the current Nietofwelzwanger (NWZ) website (https://nietofwelzwanger.nl/) into a GenAI-powered conversational platform providing reliable, tailored information supporting informed lifestyle-related decisions about fertility, contraception and preconception care for adolescents and young adults aged 16 to 25 years. The platform will be designed together with adolescents and young adults.
