HUB Living Biobank of Breast Cancer Organoids Captures Disease Heterogeneity
In a study published in Cell, Dr. Hans Clevers, CSO of HUB, has demonstrated that the heterogeneity of breast cancer subtypes can be captured using patient derived Organoid cultures. This new Organoid cancer model system can strongly support effective drug development and facilitates the link between clinical and laboratory data. This publication was also picked up by national newspaper De Volkskrant with the key message that this new system could help speed up drug development considerably while also saving money.

Laser shoes prevent 'freezing' in Parkinson patients | Clear reduction in symptoms
Freezing of gait, an absence of forward progression of the feet despite the intention to walk, is a debilitating symptom of Parkinson's disease. Laser shoes that project a line on the floor to the rhythm of the footsteps help trigger the person to walk. The shoes benefit the wearer significantly, according to research by the University of Twente and Radboud university medical center, which will be published on December 20 in Neurology, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
Health Value Creation raises €2 million for Innovative Surgical Devices
Health Value Creation BV, an innovative startup focusing on surgical devices for laparoscopic and bowel surgery, has raised €2 million in funding. The Series A round was led by Chemelot Ventures, assisted by co-investors Limburg Business Development Fund (LBDF) and existing shareholder Inkef Capital. Science and industry collaborate on affordable alternatives for antibiotics
Bijna vijftig wetenschappers en twintig bedrijven gaan werken aan de ontwikkeling van nieuwe toegankelijke en betaalbare antibiotica, en alternatieven voor antibioticagebruik. Dat gebeurt in acht onderzoeksprojecten die groen licht hebben gekregen van NWO-domein Toegepaste en Technische Wetenschappen (TTW). NWO investeert samen met het ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport (VWS) bijna 7 miljoen euro in het onderzoeksprogramma.
Proteins may improve screening for colorectal cancer
While colorectal cancer screening already saves many thousands of lives, there is still room for improvement. By looking at a combination of specific proteins rather than at a single blood protein alone, substantially more patients with colorectal cancer and advanced adenomas could be detected. The study describing these findings, conducted by researchers from the Netherlands Cancer Institute and VU University Medical Center, is published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Decision-making closer to the patient
Patiënten krijgen meer te zeggen over het beleid van zorginstellingen. Cliënten kunnen op deze manier meedenken over de organisatie van de zorgverlening, bijvoorbeeld over het aanbod aan maaltijden in ziekenhuizen. Dit is nodig om de zorg beter aan te laten sluiten bij de wensen en verwachtingen van mensen. Dat staat in het wetsvoorstel medezeggenschap cliënten zorginstelling 2018 waarmee de ministerraad, op voorstel van minister Bruins voor Medische Zorg heeft ingestemd.NWO invests 550 million euros in research within the top sectors
NWO draagt 550 miljoen euro bij aan het Kennis- en Innovatiecontract 2018-2019. Met dit contract onderschrijven overheid, bedrijfsleven en kennisinstellingen de inhoudelijke ambities voor de topsectoren met als doel het Nederlandse kennis- en innovatiesysteem te versterken. In totaal wordt een bedrag van 4,7 miljard euro geïnvesteerd. De NWO-bijdrage is bestemd voor hoogwaardig wetenschappelijk onderzoek.
