Citizen Voices, Trust and Solid Legal Basis Needed for Efficient Use of Health Data

On 3 May, the proposal for the European Health Data Space (EHDS) was presented. This is an initiative with ambition. However, it is vital that citizens’ rights and their representation is included.

The EHDS was a long-awaited proposal and finally presented on 3 May, providing a harmonised framework for the legal groundwork concerning the secondary use of health data in the EU. However, those that are involved were saying that patient trust in its functioning and the impending health data revolution is essential.

Want to know more about the European Health Data Space (EHDS) and the importance of patients in this matter?  EURACTIV wrote, based on interviews with participants, that, for example, it should be clearer to patients what the consequences are of sharing or not sharing their medical data and that there should be a mandatory composition for oversight bodies where all interested parties (including patient associations) are represented.
