Healthcare in the 21st Century

Health systems around the world are now facing similar challenges as they grapple with ageing populations and rising incidences of chronic disease. In parallel, decision-makers are under pressure to design health systems which are able to cope with new and existing health issues, yet, which are both financially sustainable and make use of innovative technologies and powerful drugs. In an age of globalization, the provision of health care and its challenges transcend borders. International collaboration and knowledge exchange is thus a crucial component of tackling current and future health issues in a quest to improve global healthcare for all.

The Ageing Society
The world’s older population continues to grow at an unprecedented rate and in the near future, for the first time in known history, the global population of people over the age of 65 will exceed the population of children. Stakeholders in the health sector now need to envisage how an increasingly aged population will affect health care demands and social costs. This theme aims to spark discussion and insights relating to physical and social infrastructure. How might proactive smart solutions in these areas foster better health and well-being at an older age?

Increasing Quality & Cost-Effectiveness
With increasingly ambitious goals and high expectations around health care access and quality, there is immense pressure on health systems to deliver better health care results, on a limited budget. This calls for tremendous efforts in efficiency, which triggers opportunities for change and innovation. The implementation of more patient-centered, flexible, and creative health care solutions can assist in creating more efficient health care systems. This theme explores innovative solutions in health systems that present opportunities for efficiency gains. These include, but are not limited to, network care, medical technologies and data sharing.

Preventing Epidemic
As the world becomes increasingly connected, epidemics of a communicable disease now spread faster than ever before. Simultaneously, epidemics of noncommunicable diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are now the leading cause of death in most nations across the globe, including middle- and lower-income countries. In order to mitigate against the impact of epidemics of both communicable and noncommunicable disease, resilient and strong health systems need to be developed. New technologies which help shift the focus from disaster management to prevention are paramount. This theme aims to inspire delegates to share their knowledge and experiences from different contexts and stimulate cross-border solutions in the identification, termination and prevention of epidemic health threats.
